United Airlines Pilots versus CEO Glenn Tilton.

Pilots of UAL Corp’s subsidiary United Airlines made a bold statement, in a letter, yesterday about Chief Executive Officer Glenn F. Tilton. Captain Steve Wallach, chairman of the United Master Executive Council, said, “United Airlines now ranks at the bottom of nearly every performance and customer satisfaction category, and its financial performance is steadily deteriorating. Under Glenn Tilton’s tenure, United has gone from being the finest airline in the world, with the best route structure and safety record, to a shell of its former self. He has had every opportunity to turn this company around, and tap the abilities of its first-class employees, but instead he has run it into the ground.” He, on behalf on pilots, is asking the executive to resign.

Tilton, who has pulled United out of the 2002-2006 bankruptcy, has been in power since September of 2002. He hasn’t managed to keep employees happy, nor make a decent effort to improve the airline’s on-time performance. 59.3% of United’s flights arrived on time in June, the second worst in the nation. Is it Glenn’s time to go? Perhaps… but it seems as thought the airline was already in trouble prior to his arrival.

I’m curious to know what you think. Write me an email and I’ll post updates (heckmanjd@gmail.com) / comments. Should Mr. Tilton resign? Should he not? You have a say. I’ll post my opinion at noon (EST).

  1. Being a UAL A&P for 21+ years I’m confident the mechanics would like to see Tilton gone as much as any employee group. I don’t understand why all of our unions are not working together in a type of coalition to get rid of this bozo. Somebody please explain. The different unions have never been ‘united’ together for anything. If we were to do so, there lies the true strength.

  2. Richard – Thanks for you comment. It seems to me that Mr. Tilton has not treated his employees with respect. Do you find this to be true?

  3. Of course I stand by my comments. Tilton needs to go. We need someone who believes in this airline, not just there for a windfall at any cost to employee welfare. I despise the man as most employees do. I remember a proud airline.

I’m a 20+ year mechanic. I love to see my airplane I worked on the night before take off and fly because of something I fixed!

Morale is low, for the most part mech’s don’t care if the airplane goes out or not. We have no parts anyway, all outsoursed. When we do it’s not surprising to go thru 2-3 new units to find one that works. Kinda makes it hell on troubleshooting.

I can understand the pilots about having an engine out. Thankfully they are trained for that and it ended safely. I believe they were all guppies and who overhauls those engines? Not UAL.

I don’t even want to think about an air disaster but it is coming, take my word for it.

Well just blowin steam and it’s not helping.

  4. ps Who are you?

  5. Sorry I forgot your original question.
YES I would like to see his head on a stick.
