US Airways: Another Fee.

US Airways announced an additional fee for customers who do not check their baggage online. Customers can already check-in online, 24 hours prior to a flight. However, you also have the option to pre-pay your baggage fees online. If you do not pre-pay your baggage fees online, it’s $5 on-top of the fees for checking your bag(s) $15 (first bag) / $25 (second bag).

This is among several of the “self-service” initiatives that US Airways is enacting to save customers and US Airways time and money.

“When customers check in online instead of at the airport, it reduces congestion in airport lobbies, minimizes wait times for others who really do need to interact with an agent and ultimately reduces costs,” said a memo from US Airways to employees.

“We want to pass along this cost savings to our customers who choose to use our convenient online tools and encourage more to do the same!”

United is the only other airline, to my knowledge, that offers the option of pre-paying baggage fees online. However, United does not charge any additional fees if you decide to pay the baggage fees at the airport.
